Trip 99 - St Neots

Friday 6th August (Day 1)

We left home by 9.45am. While our destination was St Neots Caravan and Camping Club site we were going via Stanton near Bury St Edmunds as we were due to view a possible bungalow to buy. We had a good drive there and even viewed another bungalow on the way. (Well to confirm the area did not suit.) Having viewed the property we had to drive along the A14 which we knew was over ten miles of slow traffic. We opted for a route via Thetford. This still resulted in joining the queue of traffic on the A14 but avoided about eight plus miles. Due to our satnav not being updated, the route to the Caravan and Camping Club site was, well, weird to the say the least. About twenty miles extra was the result. We arrived about 2.30pm and joined the others on a river side pitch (the River Great Ouse.) We all spent the afternoon catching up with news. After we all cooked our meals we all went for a walk along the river before returning and congregating until about 10.30pm when we all retired as it was starting to feel cool and damp.

Saturday 7th August (Day 2)

So a good nights sleep, as usual. Breakfast was warm croissants and then we sat around waiting for the others. Both Graham and Chris are slow / late starters, to the point that the toilet block was closed for cleaning when they wanted to shower (it closes between 9.45 to 11.00am, although another block was left for people to use). This meant that it was around 11.40 before we walked into St Neots - only about half a mile along the riverside. We then strolled along the high street and finished at the Coach House pub. Some ate; some just had a drink. Around 3.30pm we were back at the site getting tables decorated as it was Resa and Eric’s 40th anniversary and Sue and Alan’s 50th. A bit of shampers and cake. We then sat and chatted until rain stopped play. We all disappeared into our motorhomes for a short time and when it cleared up reconvened. We then had a game of ‘Mr and Mrs’ which passed some time and raised a laugh or two. The original plan was a big BBQ for all but the weather prevented this so we all did our own thing. After eating the weather had improved and we sat and chatted till 10.00pm by which time it has cooled down and we all went into our motorhomes with a view of bed.

Sunday 8th August (Day 3)

A rainy night with grey clouds greeting us in the morning. At 5.30am Eric had some bad news, in that his 94 year old mum, Mary, had been admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties so they might go home today. Anyway after breakfast we all mooched about for a while. The news for Eric was that they could not go and visit his mum where she is currently being looked after and she had improved slightly. He would know more around 9.00pm this evening. So we all went for a walk with the threat of rain lingering over us. The walk was along the river across it at Eaton Socon locks and back along the other side, about 2.5 miles. Having crossed the river we passed the pub we tried to get a Sunday roast only to be informed it was fully booked. A short distance later we saw, across a field, the Millers Arms. Well we had to try it. A higgledy-piggledy pub with wires everywhere. Good beer but the kitchen was closed. Having had a drink we crossed back to continue the walk. As we did so the heavens opened and it was discovered that I had not ensured Chris’ waterproof jacket was in the backpack. This meant she had mine! Fortunately, having crossed the field we all huddled in a small ‘cave’ created by the bushes until the rain passed which was only few minutes in any event. Continuing on we opted to extend the walk a short distance to take in The Bridge House pub and so we sat for an hour by the River Great Ouse chatting under cover as it rained a couple of times; nothing much but we were glad to be sheltered. Having been unsuccessful at booking a Sunday roast it was suggested we had a chinese meal delivered to the site which was agreed. On returning to the site the rest of the afternoon was spent chatting until we all ordered our food. It was delivered about 6.30pm and we all went into our motorhomes for what was a nice meal. We then gathered in Resa and Eric’s MH to play the Mexican Train Game until just past 11.00pm. Then bed.

Monday 9th August (Day 4)

So some rain in the night and squally showers in the morning. We said farewell to Resa and Eric who have gone home to be able to visit Erics mother. We had breakfast and sat in the motorhome as the weather was bright one moment and then heavy rain the next. It was likely to get a bit better in the afternoon but no guarantee it would. There was also a yellow warning for thunderstorms. We decided to ‘cut and run’ as did the others (albeit Su and Alan quite reluctantly). By 11.40am we were on our way and with an easy, trouble free, run home were unloading and cleaning the motorhome to get it ‘put to bed’ by 4.00pm
