Trip 126 - Sherringham - MCC 60th Anniversary

Wednesday 26th July (Day 1)

Off to Anglia MCC’s 60th Anniversary meet at Sherringham High School. We, three of us as we had Nala with us, left about 11.00, leaving the ‘patio men’ still working. 1300 is the start time and we rolled up at ……1300! We received a ‘goody bag’ and then were quickly set up, including the pop-up tent. A bit of lunch and then we strolled into the town about a mile away. It was a pleasant day but wet weather is forecast. That said we had a nice gentle stroll along the front. The town was very busy as was the beach. Lots in the sea which looked cold and so many dogs. Then we slowly returned via The Robin Hood pub getting back just before 1700. A stir fry for tea and 1930 over tot he hall for a welcome from the chairman, pay our fees, buy some raffle tickets and then six games of bingo. Neither of us got close to a win as is usual. Then the last hour was a chat followed by returning to the motorhome.

Thursday 27th July (Day 2)

An overcast day with a clear threat of some rain - as it did overnight. After breakfast it was noticed that a wood was nearby and so we decided to make for it for Nala to run around. Turning away from the direction of the sea front we made it to a church in Upper Sherringham and at this point the map app system gave up. We opted for a ’no though road’ as it was going in the general direction we needed to go. Slowly the road gave way to gravel and then grass (up to our knees) and them to a field of broad beans or something similar. We could see where we needed to go but it looked a forlorn hope. That said ‘We are British’ and with iron resolve we made our way though and around this obstacle and, eventually, found a way out onto the road we should have come up. This led us into Sherringham Park National Trust site. Here we had a coffee which was not overly great and then continued our walk. We returned by the route we should have taken and got back after about a five mile stroll. The wet weather had held off, raining only while we had a coffee under cover. Having got back the rain tipped down for a while so we were very lucky. We had a simple evening meal and at 1930 went to the school hall for the entertainment. The singer was very good and the night was spent chatting and dancing away until around 2330.

Friday 28th July (Day 3)

This morning we had agreed to ‘spend’ our two £5 vouchers for the ‘Pie Man Shop’. We sat outside with Nala and had a full big boys breakfast which was lovely, even the sausages were made on the premises. The plan was then to walk along the shoreline to Cromer abut four miles away. The the was out so the whole of the way could be undertaken on the beach. This is the first time Nala had been to a beach and she was just not fussed and never moved from our side. When we got to Cromer we sat for a while watching a group of adults inflate standup boards and squirm into wet suits that, for some, they may have out grown. We continued on and along the short pier before going into town to check on bus times. Buses were quite frequent so we returned to the shopping area. Chris found some shorts and a fleece at a ‘steal’. We then sat in the courtyard of a pub for a pint before catching a bus back to Sherringham. Again Nala had never been on a bus but we were dismayed to be charged 50p for her. In Sherringham we had to have another pint to recover from this exorbitant charge for Nala. Another small purchase of solar lights and two t-shirts before the walk back to the site. No cooking this evening as by 1800 we were ‘booted and suited’ (well long trousers and a short) for the 60th Anniversary meal. The starters was a choice of mushroom or vegetable soup or chicken wings. The man course was chicken or pork with roast potatoes, boiled new potatoes, stuffing, yorkshire pudding, carrots, cheese cauliflower, cabbage and gravy. Apart from the meal you just helped yourself. Desert was Eton mess or apple crumble. With around 120 people to feed it took most of the evening and as just dandy. I should also mention the pork crackling which was to die for. It was well after 2330 that we walked back for a night cap (and to ensure Nala had a least a wee).

Saturday 29th July (Day 4)

45 years! That is how long we have been married today. Really where does time go? We had a simple breakfast and then walked into town to look around the market. Chris found something for the garden that she has been hankering after so I strolled back with and back int town to meet her and Nala by the sea front. Once back together it was about 1240 and we fancied a pint before the fish and chips we had agreed upon. The chip shop had some of the best fish AND chips we have had for long time, however they had no pickled onions! We sat outside the shop eating and chatting to a Norwich man in his 80’s. It was then a gentle walk among the crowds looking at the shop’s wares. A small fortune spent on the butchers and the sky threatened rain so we scurried into the Robin Hood pub to complete the set of cask ales - Timothy Taylors, Doom Bar and Proper Job. Once the sky had brightened we returned to the motorhome where we sat out, and then under the pop-up, and out again etc as the weather was quite weird. We really did not feel hungry so at 1930 found ourselves back in the hall for the second of the singers to entertain us. The first was good but this man was even better. So we all bopped around until 2330 and then meandered back to our beds.

Sunday 30th July (Day 5)

Up for a sausage sandwich for breakfast and then back to the hall for the ‘Derek’s Dodgy Dip’ and the raffle. We won two prizes which, considering the number of prizes , was not unexpected. Afterwards, around 1130 we decided to go into Sherringham as we believed there was a carnival. If there was it was over quickly or very small. Plan B; we walked along the beach in the other direction than that previously, ie towards Weybourne. While warm it was cloudy and very windy. Around 1330 we got there after a very pleasant cliff top walk and found, to our relief, the pub was not one of the many casualties from the recent covid troubles. The Ship Inn was positively full to the brim. A couple of pints was had and a very helpful chap informed us that the CH1 bus went to Sherringham at 37 minutes past the hour until 1737. We caught the 1437 and back to the site. After an evening meal we made our way, again, to the school hall for the Chinese Raffle. This is an interesting twist on a raffle. To start with there is a prize for everyone. When your ticket is drawn you have two choices; firstly to open a prize from the table; the alternative is to ‘steal’ from one of those who have opened a raffle prize. If your prize is ‘stolen’ you have the choice of ‘stealing’ from another or opening the raffle prize. Each time only two steals are allowed. It is a slow but fun process. After this it was chat and then back to bed. We actually returned and were in bed before 2300.

Monday 31st July (Day 6)

Today the weather is meant to be dry (liar liar pants on fire). After breakfast we walked into Sherringham and then along the beach towards Cromer. We arrived at West Runton and went into the village and found the Cromer Tea Shop. Here we had crab sandwiches and a pot of tea; Chris thought these the best crab sarnies she had ever had! As we left it started to lightly rain so we decided a bus back was a good idea. We had a thirty minute wait during which time it stopped raining so we returned to the North Norfolk Coastal Path to walk path. Entering the town we approached The Lobster pub that had live music from the ‘Playing for Cake ‘ group of musicians, many ukuleles, but with a keyboard and drum backing. Just an amateur group keen to entertain. Well a pint or two of Abbot ale while listening to them was a good way to while some time away. We eventually arrived back around 1600 and had decided that tomorrow we would leave for home. Due to this we packed things away before sitting inside and listening to the radio prior to our evening meal and last trip over to the hall.

Tuesday 1st August (Day 7)

We have decided to go home a day early as the weather forecast is not looking good and the workmen are still working on our patio. So by just after 10.00 we were off and had a great drive home getting there by 1230.
