Trip 107 - Brampton

Friday 28th January (Day 1)

A nice easy trip to day. Only 20 miles to Brampton and the Willows Camp site. We will be meeting eight others - Chris and Graham, Sue and Alan, Gill and Dave and Resa and Eric. We left about 11.30 and even after a quick shop at Sainsbury’s we were set up on the site by 12.20pm. Soon after the others arrived, in the order of Graham, Sue, Dave and lastly Eric. The girls decided to gather to celebrate Resa & Eric becoming grandparents and NY. Then we all cooked our evening meal (curry for us). We then split into two groups (ladies and gents). Each played games, had a drink or three and chatted. 11.00pm saw us all returning to our motorhomes. Chris arrived to inform me that the girls are off to Benidorm in May!

Saturday 29th January (Day 2)

A nice cooked breakfast with bright sunshine outside, although a tad windy. By 11.00am we all left for the walk across the fields to Huntingdon which is the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. Samuel Pepys also lived / visited here. (Samuel Pepys uncle owned a house in Brampton which he inherited putting his mother and sister in it.) A stroll around part of the town with a visit to a church and the Oliver Cromwell museum and then a stop for a coffee. Oliver Cromwell was born in 1599 and educated here and it was here that he raised the New Modelled Army to start the overthrow of the monarchy. Before that he was elected to Parliament. On our return we stopped to look in an antiques shop which was a labyrinth of rooms and stairways and Resa found something to buy. We got back to the site by 2.30pm and some went to the Brampton Mill for a drink (until past 6.00pm) but we went to our motorhome for a cup of tea. We were due to go for a walk with Chris and Graham around 4.30-5.00pm but they were still in the Brampton Mill with the others so we set off on our own. A pleasant two plus mile walk across the fields returning by the Great Ouse River to Brampton Mill. Halfway around we stopped at the Black Bull to check out their beer, which was most acceptable. Arriving at Brampton Mill for second drink with the main group but they soon left for their dinner. We ordered a take away pizza (Duck and Hoisin) and walked back to eat it. It was very nice indeed. It was agreed that tonight rather than ‘hims and hers’ we would split into a six and a four. Resa decided the split should be Chris, Graham, Chris and myself as the four which suited. We met up after our meal and played games until well past midnight.

Sunday 30th January (Day 3)

A bright start (again) to the day. We seem to be lucky with the weather. Around 11.00am all but Sue and Alan and Resa and Eric went for a walk. We started off in Hinchingbrook Country Park. Then we took a footpath into Brampton village where we had a coffee in The Black Bull. Next it was onwards and upwards along to the River Great Ouse and along the towpath back to the site. The weather was so good we sat outside and had scones and clotted cream, with the usual discussion about cream on jam or vice versa. 3.20pm saw us all leave for the Brampton Mill where we were to meet an old friend, Linda Bennett. She arrived just before us. Dave and Gill said their hellos but then left as they were going home as Dave had work tomorrow. We sat and caught up on the gossip with Linda. Around 5.00pm Linda left us and we ordered food, which was really nice. Then back to our homes and we all piled in to Resa and Eric’s motorhome where, not unsurprisingly, we played (S)Uno. It was abut 10.30pm when we said our goodnights.

Monday 31st January (Day 4)

Well the UK was ‘hit’ by two storms last night and, while a bit windy here, that was all we had. Morning broke nice and sunny and we all packed up, said our goodbyes and left. We left first for the 20 mile journey home to Wimblington which took about 40 minutes. A great weekend catching up with the greatest of friends.
